At 11am on Friday, despite the cold weather, a large crowd had gathered outside the Newcastle civic Centre, the climate change strike for February organized by UKSCN NORTH EAST.
We can see that most of the participants are students, they wear thick clothes, wearing a hat, with their placards and banners for this activity. The slogans, “planet hotter than your boyfriend” and “you will die of old age, we will die of climate change,” are all new and original, not blunt slogans like “protect our planet.” But it also speaks to the concerns of young people about climate change. We see the power of youth.

Anna Taylor, organizer of UKSCN said: “it’s been a year since the 1st # youthstrike4climate, and I’m so cheerful to see so many people here today.”
Mahesh Bali, a student from Newcastle University, said: “I am very happy that I can join likeminded friends to make our young people’s voices heard in this way.”
After the rally, hundreds of people started from the Civic Centre and marched down Northumberland Street towards Grey’s Monument, Shouting “wake up” over the loudspeaker, hoping that more people would become aware of the grim reality of climate change and join the queue to protect the environment.

Taylor told me that they think the governments haven’t realized the severity of the crisis enough. “And I really like to see a future where they do listen to us”. “The reason to strike is because we have no other way of expressing our opinions”.
When asked about the demands, she said the most important one is that the government could recognize the urgency of the situation and began to take action to deal with it.
I also interviewed a bystander who didn’t attend, annovia, a student from Durham University who didn’t know about the event but said she was inspired and touched.” In the future, if here is opportunity to join, I will, we have to do something, because this is our future”.

Wildfires in Australia, warming oceans, homeless polar bears, floods, drought… We all know the state of the planet, and the impact of climate change is profound. A wide-ranging UN climate report, released on 10 March 2020, shows that climate change is having a major effect on all aspects of the environment, as well as on the health and wellbeing of the global population.
As students, we may not be able to do anything especially great, but at least we can spread our voice and alert more people. This was my first time to join the strike and I felt overwhelmed by the energy and positivity these people gave off. I heard young people’s power and I feel so proud of them.

Now is the time for us young people to stand up and protect our planet in our own way. Climate change has far-reaching impacts. We should consider for future generations. As a youth, I feel very proud to participate in these meaningful things.
