Have a good time picking up litter in Jesmond

“Picking up trash doesn’t sound like much fun, but when you do it, you could find it much more fun”. Said Keith Jewitt, the organizer of keep Jesmond clean.

This garbage collection activity was organized by Keep Jesmond clean, a community group of residents from the local community in Jesmond. Some volunteers from the university and the NUSU also came to participate in this activity.

The weather was very bad that day. It began to rain a little at the beginning of the activity, and the wind blew the leaves everywhere, which made it more difficult to pick up the garbage. However, 33 people still participated and completed the task excellently. The activity was a great success.

Each participant was given a plastic bag, a litter pick grabber, a vest and a glove. Each person is assigned their area of responsibility, usually a street, and if anyone feel tired can always go back to the club to take a rest, where hot tea and delicious cupcakes are prepared.

People can chat and make new friends with each other. Bethany Richardson, a student at the university of sunderland, is delighted to have met so many new friends. “Everyone gets together to do something meaningful, it’s really great.”

Jewitt told me that they planned to hold the event eight times a year, and last year they collected about four tons of trash, which is a very considerable number.

Picking up garbage is just a small act, it happens around us, everyone can do it, but the significance of this act is far-reaching, maybe this simple act can affect more people to save resources, do not throw litter, to love our community, love the environment.

My feelings

I also participated in this activity. Picking up garbage with litter grabber seems easy, but when I went to do it myself, I found that it was not. The garbage is easy to slide, and the wind could blow the garbage bags upside down.

However, it was really a pleasant experience, whether it was the sense of accomplishment brought by picking up a bag of garbage, or the new friends I chatted with after the activity, which made me feel fruitful. At the same time, this event gives ordinary people like me a chance to make my own efforts to protect the environment.

Hope more people join me !

  2. I quite agree with this “Everyone gets together to do something meaningful, it’s really great.”This activity is very meaningful, and I also want to participate in it. I can do something within my power, but it can be of great benefit to our home, and I can meet more friends with the same interests. Support you!
